Can I just say how much it amuses me that
Snape likes Neville
in this universe?

I know! And I utterly love his friendship with Alice, too. Which I think is probably a huge part of why he likes Neville and Evelyn.
Well, you know, and the "not blowing up his classroom twice a week" probably has something to do with it...

He likes a lot of the kids, actually! He's actively teaching the Weasleys and the ISS kids Occlumency, and seems to get along fairly well with Hermione... and Sally-Anne, I think? Or he has a good opinion of her, at least.

It seems like having a worse life has helped, actually. Or a horrible-in-a-different-way life.
Though not having to be an authority figure (well, not a teacher) has probably helped a lot too.

I suspect the thing that helped the most was Not Being The Double Agent.
Azkaban was clearly less stressful.
