Wouldn't Harry have said something on an OO post if Blaise having his stepfather killed was part of the challenge, though? Or am I misunderstanding you?
If it was part of the challenge itself - "Dear Mr. Zabini: Cause your mother's husband's death. Love and kisses, your sponsor." - then he'd have to tell Harry, wouldn't he?
I ... don't have a lot of faith that people tell Harry things, especially things he might not approve of, from Official Channels.
(Though on the flip side Raz probably would tell Harry things, wouldn't he, and Raz knows something, hrm. So that weakens my theory.)
But I can see the challenge including "Do not report this to Harry" or "Come up with a cover story for the nefarious thing you actually have to do and stick to it for everything, including Harry" or some other thing.
I think we were assuming that his absence would have been noted if he had taken things into his own hands. Also he has always shown a marked reluctance to act for himself, using his money to get others to do things. In fact, he says annoying or offensive things over the years but I can think of very few times he is described as doing something, whether hexing another student or participating in activities. I see him, and by extension his mother, acting behind the scenes to make things happen but never getting their own hands dirty.
