I'm not sure why I was suddenly thinking about this just now, but *have* there been any Hufflepuff Death Eaters? Or Gryffindor? Slytherin, absolutely, and I could see Ravenclaw, but I'm curious about the other two.

peter pettigrew, for gryffindor! i can't think about any hufflepuffs, though.

mind you, in a series that was a little less heavy-handed about its Message, there'd've been plenty from all houses. heh.

Or, hell, a series that appeared to reliably recall that there were four houses of students, not two. (One of the things I love about Alternity is the balance of, y'know, there are actually plot-relevant people everywhere.)

But I suspect that Helga's "I'll teach the lot and treat them all the same" attitudes would make the 'Puffs the least likely to ally themselves with the DEs. Guts-and-glory can totally do a grand crusade, and intellectual obsession is almost stereotypically prone to going off into questionable corners, sometimes without noticing (so long as there's a reading lamp).

OTOH, hufflepuffs are loyal, once you have them...

Indeed. The tricky part is catching one.

Which raises the interesting question: which people might bother, in canon at least, trying to catch a Puff? It's a chessmaster move, really, but I don't think many people in canon are that smart. :P

Ducking in to comment that this reminds me of a discussion Pomona and Antonin had about Hufflepuffs and the Dark Arts. http://alt-antonin.dreamwidth.org/2618.html?thread=22842#cmt22842

(also, does anyone remember if we were given McNair's House in canon?)

Dolohov I can definitely imagine doing it, but they'd have to show some talent/interest first. He looks like he's going after Justin, for one.
Maybe Lucius? Maybe?

Macnair was head of Gryffindor in our Y1 so Gryffindor.

(Also, in Alternity, there's Minerva, who is something of a special case when it comes to Death Eaters, but still is one.)

I knew Alternity has him as a Gryffindor, that's why I asked--I couldn't remember if that was canon out Alternity filling in the blanks.

('Course, the same site puts Umbridge in Slytherin, but it uses information that isn't actually in the text as its reason.)
