I was hoping for something like, "Lovely Lavender, it would be unseemly for a gentleman to deny a lady in attendance at such festivities the opportunity of at least one dance. Since Cedric - who as a Hufflepuff noticed quite keenly that there were some who were lacking for appropriate partners - was unable to correct this himself, he asked me to step in." (Damn, I cannot do Linus's voice. There's a shot at it.)
Unfortunately, he's not Slytherin enough to come up with that. ;)
