Yes, of course that eventually came to mind, and I kicked myself for not having been more wary. But at that point I was reeling from a series of unexpected betrayals, and when that happens, one is more likely to cling more firmly to those one thinks one can trust.
Stupid of me. But those few years were not my best by any stretch of the imagination.
