Dean Thomas!  I was wondering where he was (because JKR has stated that he's a half-blood on her website--his mother's a Muggle, his dad a wizard), but if he's still in the camps it looks like he has yet to show magical ability.  Hmm...

This also suggests that his dad was still killed by Death Eaters in the backstory.

That's right, this is a Muggle camp and not a Mudblood camp (unless... could it be both, somehow?). How odd that Dean is here. Do you think that he has showed magic but been prudent enough to hide it? Even so, his name would be written in the magical Hogwarts Book (since he was presumably born before they started keeping a fake book), wouldn't it?

I've actually always been a bit confused about the relationship between the magical book (which should mean a Mudblood can be identified right away) and the accounts of Mudbloods only being taken from their families when they first show magic. Is it just that, until they show magic, the MoM keeps tabs on them but doesn't feel the need to relocate them?

Do we know for sure that the book was used to keep track of Muggle-born wizards right away?

Well, we know that the Sorting Hat apologized to Terry for not being able to keep his name out of the fake book. Which to me implied that the DEs were using the book already, and that the reason Terry couldn't be smuggled to Moddey Dhoo was because his existence was already known because of the book.

I'm just a bit tangled about the whole issue. Maybe a player will be able to clarify why people are moved to Muggleborn camps when they first show magic rather than when their names appear in the book?

At this point, Dean is classified as a muggleborn.

The camps vary from location to location as to their layout, in the various districts, depending on the size of the camps, and whether they are using existing buildings or new ones created specifically for the purpose of housing displaced populations. In some districts, the muggle, muggleborn and squib camps are three separate autonomous entities. In others, one camp that is smaller (i.e., the muggleborn section) might be entirely enclosed inside a larger camp (such as the muggle section). In others, the camps might be generally separate in as far as housing, but share certain facilities, such as administrative, security, or health. In this case, Terry is working in a camp where the infirmary facilities are shared between muggles, muggleborns and squibs, and the Infirmary Rats include all three classified types.

He would certainly be a very interesting character to add to the Hogwarts mix. A student who has lived in the Mudblood camps for years and knows exactly what's going on there and what it's like to be a Mudblood! I bet he would shake things up.
