So, Eton. There are four references to it in the archives up to this May (well, that I can find. It's remotely possible there's more near the end of Y4/this year that I didn't find, but that's not the point anyway).
Three of them are in April of Year 2. One is a reference by Regulus to his current location when talking to Sirius, and has already been linked. One is a reference by Narcissa to Regulus' regular location after he makes one of his less coherent posts, and references how Voldemort "has kept him so close of late"

The final one is a post by Lucius partly re: that same post, and has a lot more data than the others, and I'm going to quote:

[Regulus] has been in the constant company of the Lord Protector since departing Malfoy Manor on Friday afternoon, leaving His side only to fetch any items or ingredients needed as components of Our Lord’s latest effort. (This effort, I am pleased to say, is audacious in its ambition, a testament to Our Lord’s commitment to uncovering the most arcane and occult of magical lore — I might go so far as to say, areas of magic previously thought lost to us, but now only imaginable through His unparalleled skill as a sorcerer and superior mage.)

I hope I can thus ease your mind by reporting that Regulus was present and not at all in distress when I arrived at Our Lord’s private laboratories at Eton last evening [...] I am honoured to say for my own part that the Lord Protector decided to entrust me with the task of assisting him in the most delicate and vital of procedures within the course of His … groundbreaking … experiment.

I... think that conclusively answers the question of what the precedent Barty was referring to was. Um.

(For anyone who's curious, the final reference to Eton I found is in the Order meeting minutes after Y4 end-of-year--it's where Voldemort took Harry.)

(Also, so, um, yeah, it did have to do with Regulus. I suppose that teaches me not to try to answer questions off of vague memories. I'm going to go research something else now, okay?)

Ahahahaha, I think I missed this when I went through as much of the backlog as I could while catching up (I started reading in... November?):

Someone suggested Barty Crouch, but that was a joke. He'd be competent AND evil AND he's already got a job that he seems to enjoy more than anyone ought to. Rudy suggested kidnapping Crouch and impersonating him via Polyjuice Potion, in order to teach and to infiltrate another Order member into the Voldemort's court but that was also shot down by ~~every other~~ several members.

I mean, now that we know that Dolohov knows Crouch very well, it would have been catastrophic, but the little reversal-of-canon there made me cackle.

Oh, yes. I was laughing over that again when I reread that. It's the wrong end of the year, but it still amuses me.

There's a lot of little jokes in the meeting minutes, but I think that's one of my favorites.

Thanks for the compilation of Terrible Times at Eton. I will just add that Regulus was working on at least one other project that I interpreted as maybe involving Inferi?
Whether these were closely linked, entirely separate, or somewhere in between remains to be seen. That said, can we pause to acknowledge how creepy Voldemort is, sitting in his labs doing experiments involving vivisection or whatnot when he could just delegate to the DoM? Thus implying he's crazy paranoid and/or enjoys vivisection? Dude doesn't deserve a nose.

Huh. Now where, canonically, did Voldemort use Inferi? (ah, that's a rhetorical question. well, mostly, I'm probably forgetting some of them)
Anyway--he's Voldemort! What do you expect! --and probably both, to be hoenst. (I'm going to dig around in the information we have on the DoM, next, I think, actually. Ideas for search terms would be welcome--I've got 'mysteries', 'DoM', 'Rookwood', and 'unspeakable' but I'm having a hard time thinking of things that won't match a bunch of other stuff)
