And not just new ones, but new ones with journals. Alternity has a vibrant cast of OCs, but by my accounting Miss Rachel Lamont is only the third one to get a direct voice. (The others being Lana Sandoval and Hydra Lestrange). Unless I've missed someone? (I consider someone to be an OC only if they've received no mention in canon whatsoever; Sally-Anne, Dominic Selwyn, and Siz squeak through by the slimmest of margins.)

Either way, it's an interesting narrative decision, and the decision to deviate from it has certainly caught my attention, at least.

Oooh, her being that guy's daughter would be really awesome. What was his name again? Weren't they trying to remember how old she'd be now/figure out what her name was now?

Well, we were discussing it here in alt-fen--the Auror's name was Brodie and the age should be a few years older than the fifth years, maybe 4-7 years older, although that's an estimate since all we know is that she was at an age where she could talk and was able to hold a conversation with Dolohov.
That said, I feel like a lifetime of consuming narratives makes me see Chekhov's gun everywhere. Or, well, Chekhov's orphan, in this case. (If an orphan is mentioned in the first act, she will be revealed to be a long-lost daughter or a Chosen One in the third act, I guess?).
(That said, Harry Potter would have been hilariously more existential and weird if he had been just a random orphan living an unremarkable life and we caught glimpses of a terrible war that barely affected him, just out of the corner of his eye, for seven years.)
