I think she accidentally legimized Narcissa and realized that Narcissa would (as she did) mention it to Bella. And she doesn't want Bella to think she's been hiding it from her
i just wanted to add that Bella is unable to legilimize Hydra because, like her Mother, Hydra is a natural occlumens, as well as a natural legilimens. They neutralize each other. Bella could certainly try to manipulate or force a confession out of her the old-fashioned way, but she's not actually capable of reading Hydra's mind. Natural occlumency is basically impenetrable.
This is our own game canon explanation, not book canon, but a natural occlumens/legilimens is a person born with the gift, rather than trained in it. Alternity's natural legilimens are Voldemort, Bella, Dumbledore, Ridley, and Hydra (though she has yet to learn to control it), so as you can see, they're very rare.
A trained legilimens is someone who's learned through study, though they probably possess some preternatural skill toward it (and may well be natural occlumens); a trained legilimens uses the spell when legilimizing someone. Snape and Penderyn (the Auror) are both highly skilled trained legilimens, and there are a few other Aurors of lesser skill who are training in it.
It's much more difficult to train in legilimency than occlumency. Most people only bother with the latter. If training in occlumency, it's best to work with a natural legilimens, since they are the best bet at verifying that you are successfully occluding. However, even a very well-trained occlumens might open their mind with the right torture/interrogation tactics.
Animagi also have some strong occlumency skills, though it's not known if it's to the same degree as a natural-born occlumens.
Sorry for the wall of text - I've obviously thought about this a lot :)
Thanks for clearing that up - I'd forgotten Hydra was a natural occlumens, and that was confusing me a little.
And all the thinking you do about these things is what makes Alternity so interesting to read. I'll be very keen to see the thoughts behind the game when it finishes.
Minor correction (which is not the players' fault; our records had an error): Ridley is not a natural Legilimens. Procyon was the DogStar operative who specialized on Legilimency. Ridley is a trained Legilimens.
Procyon was killed a while ago, so Ridley is getting by on just her skills.
Especially since she sent her message after Narcissa sent hers - even if she'd guessed wrong about the content of Narcissa's message, revealing herself as a legilmens more-or-less on her schedule rather than in the middle of a crisis is smart, and since she guessed right, at least she's revealing it to her mother rather than her mother questioning her about it.
