It took me until right this instant, looking at pictures of David Tennant - specifically this one:



- to figure out that that was who was cast as Barty Crouch, Jr. I think. (Though a TinEye search thinks it's Hugh Dancy. That's a rather different AU, I think.)

Anyway, is there a list somewhere of what celebs have been cast as who? *curious*

Tennant is the actor that played Barty Crouch,Jr. in Goblet of Fire. I think that it was filmed just before he started Dr.Who. Most of the Alternity PBs are the HP movie actors if their character appeared in the films. The only big difference I can think of is Narcissa.

In some cases if the movie actor was very young in the films (like Pansy), they were later replaced with a similar-looking but different actor/star.

The actor who is widely accepted as having played Antonin Dolohov, although credits sometimes read deatheater is used for Rodulphus Lestrange.
Later Susan Bones and Pansy are not the credited actors I think.
Charlie weasley only appeared in the film in a photo and is not the credited actor.
Alice Longbottom is Felicia Day on alternity. Not sure about Frank.
Justin and Michael are different.
These are just the ones I can think of off hand.
Eta: Millie, Penelope Sinistra andEloise are all different to the films too. As is Carrow I believe.

Carrow's face is not shown in his (one and only) icon.

At the time that the player chose the actor for Rodolphus, it wasn't clear which DE he was meant to be.

Frank's icons are from the singer Luka Bloom. (His first player was a big fan).

Which is funny, because Frank can't sing. Luka, however, really can.

And Matthew Lewis has grown up to have an astonishing family resemblance to him in some pictures.

In general, if the actor who was cast as the character in the movie has available photos (such as is the case for Tennant and nearly all the main characters), we use the movie actor for the basis of the icons.

No one liked the look of the movie Narcissa so her player chose Allison Doody. Similarly, we disagreed with the movie version of Justin, so picked another actor.

And as the other comment says, if younger actors were not retained or we couldn't find older pictures, sometimes they were changed out.

But for the most part, we try not to associate the icons or actors too strongly out of the game context because we don't want to break the fourth wall like that.

Yeah, I struggle to take anything Justin says seriously because of who the icon is. Because Justin and Jay are complete polar opposites; which makes it quite hilarious but then sometimes when Justin is writing sad serious stuff I just have Jay quotes in my head.

Daphne is another one that I struggle with for sort of the same reasons. I know the actress from another British TV show and her character in that is pretty much the opposite of Daphne.

Yes, it's a downside - just like I sometimes personally struggle to separate Barty Crouch and the Doctor - but honestly, James Buckley's far closer to the description of JFF in the books than the actor they hired for the movies.

But then, Gary Oldman and David Thewlis are not really like their characters, either, and they certainly both have a huge filmography with plenty of villains. (As does Rickman.)

(And I had seen his most well-known show, but it's still not my primary association for him. This coming from someone whose facial recognition would have made me an excellent casting agent, because I am always recognizing the actors in movies and shows--"hey, it's the guy who played the red shirt in blah!")

At this point, I've personally completely let go of the other and he's totally Justin in my head.

Yep, David is Barry.

I'd known he was Barty in GoF, but he was in the movie so little it wasn't really a problem; but for awhile when I started reading Alternity, I'd get distressed every time I noticed Barty's icon. "But, but, why is the Doctor being so EVIL?"
