I'm wondering, myself, how they spotted him as an Animagus. Isn't one of the things about animagi that they're near indistinguishable from normal animals when in animal form?

There's that spell that forces a reversion but obviously they didn't use that.

Maybe he was acting un-doglike? Bellatrix has thought Sirius might be a dog for a while I think (remembering a comment about Bella looking for a dog, but don't know if I can find it). So if you're looking for an Animagus you might be more likely to notice that a dog isn't acting like a dog.

But apparently 'letting yourself get KOed by Sirius Black, who then stole your hair and used it to escape' is an unsurvivable error....

It looks like he was primed to look for a big dog and when he saw the big dog he was already suspicious about pursuing him, he led his report with that. (Not that it helped him any.)

Phineus is on the Order's side. Hermione has talked to him and they have used him to convey info before. He's had plenty of opportunities to tell all, but hasn't.

From him, I'm quite surprised by this admission, though the comment about having been up for nearly 40 hours makes it rather more likely. But it's interesting that he seems to be somewhat on the side of yes, have relations and intimacy, and just bear in mind that you're leaving yourself open there. It's nice to be reminded again that Crouch can fall in love, and have his heart broken...and he's willing to let that happen.
