I'm assuming he made a horcrux at some point? Presumably unintentionally, given his horror-struck comment. I am now F5ing obsessively, and trying to remember if anyone besides Siz, Barty, and Sally-Anne wrote to him after his death. This is going to be interesting.

Well, the only example we have is Voldemort, and in all the canon examples he already had split his soul into multiple pieces. It might be an easier (DIY?) resurrection if there's only one horcrux in the mix.

My only other thought would be the ward ritual, which, just, augh. Infinitely more potential for awful. (Fuck. This is Alternity.)

...do we know what the purpose of Barty's dark rites was? I was running on the assumption it was an unhinged spree combined with a dash of getting ready to kill Hydra, but.

Check out this comment and think about what we know about the ritual killings. Barty was sending a message to Tosha's gods. Over and over again.

So here are my theories, partially put out again (I had previous nattering buried in the Barty Rampage Thread, but it was after it was well down the page):

Barty believed that he had condemned Tosha to the maw of Ammit, at least according to Tosha's beliefs: he persuaded Tosha to commit the grievous sin of making inferi, and rather than guarantee their victory, they cost him Tosha, because Tosha couldn't maintain them in combat (and was taken out to fight while still worn out from making the fucking things).

Barty, cast in the role of Avenging Horus by Tosha's theology, repeatedly making sacrifices to attempt to force Tosha's gods to grant him salvation. Hydra figures out enough of Barty's guilt to use it against him.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Rachel's fatal curse was merely Princess Bride Fatal. Tosha is in a deep coma of some sort, deep enough that they don't know he's alive in there, and has been dumped in the morgue at St. M's. He would likely have withered away and died over time, except that the wards shift dumped all the magic ever into the environment, and that was enough to let him regain consciousness.

Possibly also Barty's rampage kept him alive for that time.

These are my current theories about WHAT THE EVERLIVING FUCK.

Also, for general information, the last thoughts that Hydra reported from Tosha include the opening line of a version of the verse that was inscribed on heart scarabs; the full text is basically a "Dear my heart: please do not testify against me in the afterlife, thanks."

There are several surviving texts of various levels of "NO PLEASE SHUT UP PLEASE" and it is unclear which one Tosha was thinking of. ;)

This is an awesome theory! Also, far more preferable to my "oh fuck what if the ward magic is reviving people?" thought, because that would be really unpleasant (and distractingly implausible, depending on how.)

Okay, so. Now to poke holes in my own theory:

Tosha did not ask why he woke up in the morgue, but at St. M's; he may have been in an ordinary room. Which may mean that someone going through recovering the wounded knew he was alive and stored him at St. M's in much the same way that Charlie is stored there.

It is possible that the wards shift is still part of his recovering consciousness, but he clearly was expecting to wake up at home, not in hospital.

He has family magic involving the realm of the dead. It is reasonably common, though not universal, that magical systems that include summoning Powers From The Other Side also include some system of travel to the other side. (Cosmologically speaking, in the Egyptian system much of Tosha's stuff is based on, all dreams are basically tour boat trips through the spirit land. Things I know because I wrote a book! :P )

So: suppose that Tosha, recognising that he was getting potentially fatal curses thrown at him constantly and was in constant shock from the inferi dying, took the only out he could manage, and sent his soul on a lengthy tour boat ride. Body appears in deep coma, but still alive when the medics come around, and he is taken to St. M's with the cleanup and left there to come out of it or not. I expect the Healers have no idea what to do with "Out of body, be back later" and mostly just patched up whatever injuries happened when he fell off the roof. (Which might be less bad than if an aware entity fell off the roof, by the way; one of the reasons drunk drivers survive car crashes is they're totally relaxed because of the booze when they go through the windshield....)

Machine translation actually does well with large swaths of it, since he's mostly reciting the Liturgy of St John Chrystostom with some tweaks and changes and Google Translate knows that text, but I figured I'd have mercy on y'all! (He was having a little problem with English last night, especially since he learned most of that in Russian to begin with.)

It's a kind of old-fashioned term of endearment that doesn't translate well into English, from what I'm finding via Google. Honey, sweetheart, and darling are all kind of close but not quite.

They're the same pet names Tosha has been using for Barty all along, just written in the Cyrillic alphabet and not transliterated the way you're used to seeing them!

The Arabic is more a set of proverbs (with the exception of the last one), and aren't directly translatable --

The first is "Anger begins with madness, but ends in regret.”
The second is roughly "Keep your head" -- it stems from this (http://alt-evelyn.dreamwidth.org/15926.html#comments) conversation.
The third is "There is always tomorrow."

The last is not a proverb, and pretty much as translated above.
