Yuletide nominations
Sep. 28th, 2015 09:11 amNaomi suggested I bump this up: evidence explanation">evidence document here.
Anyone have any further comments? I'd love another example or two that's a fairly short and concrete chunk, if we can find other good ones. My thought is to post the first section (which is new if you haven't looked at it since Monday morning) and then link to the longer doc.
If no one's got further comments, I'd like to post a link to the file with some brief info to the evidence post on Tuesday evening, 9/29. (Nominations close on 10/3 at 9am UTC, so that gives some time for people to figure out nominations, make them, and maybe post additional character evidence if needed.) I'll take the linked doc out of editing status then too.
Coordination of nominations is also good: as I said in earlier discussion, I think nomination of characters who are original to Alternity, or who appear only very nominally in canon may be more successful, but once I post the evidence post, we'll have somewhere to collect evidence for specific characters if people want to try that.
For people who are new to Yuletide, the nomination process is 3 fandoms, and up to 4 characters in each fandom, so coordination allows you not to overlap character choices, and only nominated characters may be requested for the exchange (other characters may, of course, appear if relevant.)

It's Sirius finding Justin, tutoring Justin, and Justin's first post in his journal, to show how different his background is and his entry to the game at a very different point from the original canon timeline.
There's also this very early Lucius post:
http://alt-lucius.dreamwidth.org/2008/09/28/
which was originally recapped by Flourish like this "this is definitely worth a read for the 'state of the wizarding world'; I know it seems tl;dr and is too long to excerpt here, but, srsly."

Date: 2015-09-28 11:45 pm (UTC)That's Hydra's first ISS post, so you get a sense of who Hydra is, and her history, and how the other characters feel about her. She's an Alternity OC but Bellatrix having a daughter (who shares her gifts but not her personality) is one of those instantly compelling elements of the game. (I have a friend who never even read the game who has trouble remembering that Hydra is not a canon character.)

Date: 2015-09-29 11:29 pm (UTC)For characters, I nominated Siz, Pomona, and Albus, plus Irma Pince.
For the record, my other nominations involve The Librarians (the 2014 version, not the Australian 2007 version), and Arthurian Mythology. I'm not quite sure what my brain is doing back there.

Date: 2015-09-30 02:35 am (UTC)Okay, just so I understand this (because I've never paid attention to the nomination process since it's been this complicated)... Are we supposed to reply to your comment to support the nomination, or what? I also don't see where you nominated the characters, or is that on the AO3 site itself?

Date: 2015-09-30 02:55 am (UTC)(You don't have to nominate any, or can nominate just one, or just a fandom and one character. Nominations are totally optional.)
The Nominations post on the yuletide-admin community has more links (see http://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/17648.html for the DW side). Click on the first link, that says "Nominations are now open" and it will take you to the page on AO3 where you put in your nominations.
(Since there's sort of two parts to the eligibility here: whether they decide the fandom's eligible at all, and fanworks are tricky, and then whether individual characters are eligible, and whether there is enough distance between specific characters and canon for them not to count against character totals for fic. The things that go into eligibility are several layers, so there's a lot of moving parts involved.)
Probably the simplest thing to do is nominate what you want (ideally avoiding overlap if you'd like by mentioning it here: nominations can be edited until they've been reviewed, but once they've been reviewed, you can't change them.) and then see if they want more evidence for characters. (There's a little icon by the top of each fandom in the nomination page that will show if it's been reviewed and decided on: it's a small ?! symbol if it can still be edited.) Or if you want, you can throw a comment under the main evidence comment with notes for specific characters.

Date: 2015-09-30 03:14 am (UTC)Jen, do you know when they tell us whether it was approved and if we get to swap in a different nomination if it's not?

Date: 2015-09-30 10:34 am (UTC)Sometimes there'll be comments in the eligibility posts that make it clear changes might help, but that depends a lot on the available time/etc. on the part of the mods of the exchange.

if that list needs editing, feel free to suggest. I considered nominating Walburga, who is obviously less canon-bound than Poppy (or Pansy).Arista Selwyn
Regulus Black
Pansy Parkinson
Poppy Pomfrey

Date: 2015-10-14 05:27 pm (UTC)In any case, I want to thank Jenett, especially, for putting so much work into this, even though it didn't work out. I really appreciated that you were willing to make the case.
So...community fic exchange? ;)
