Is it just me, or does Pansy sound a little Imperio'd?
It's just odd to me, because she was so sullen before about being punished but now she's quite contrite. I'm not even going to touch the fact that she was hit.
Actually, now it looks like Pansy's just fine (http://community.livejournal.com/hpalternity/9159.html?thread=64967#t64967) -- if a little cautious. She's learned to strike her questions.
I do wonder to what degree she is internalizing the message that she's to blame for her mum's drinking. That's the worst thing Lucius has tried to do to her. Worse than the hitting -- because she'll get angry about that eventually (as the grim truth seeps out for her to process). But a child's guilty fear that they are responsible for a parent's pain or death or irresponsible behavior is a horrible, debilitating thing. Pansy can chew over the half-truths and outright lies, if the emotional blackmail doesn't cripple her.
Hmm. Makes your Confundus theory the more valid one, as it has worn off. If there was anything. :P
Hard to say how hard she'll internalize it. I did think it was an impossibly low move of Lucius, though, and I'm not quite sure how much it would help his cause, in the long term.
