We've just been given (via the shiny new website) a list of everybody in Harry's class at Hogwarts. Let's discuss it! Here is the list copied out and cross-checked with the canon universe using HP Lexicon—canon characters in purple, new characters in blue, missing book characters in green.
Gryffindors: Lavender Brown, Seamus Finnegan, Neville Longbottom, Parvati Patil, Ron Weasley, and Katrina Bundy,.
Missing: Hermione Granger, Dean Thomas.
Hufflepuffs: Ernie Macmillan, Susan Bones, Zacharias Smith, Megan Jones, Wayne Hopkins, Bobby Stebbins, John Summers, Eloise Midgen, and Hannah Abbott.
Missing: Justin Finch-Fletchley.
Ravenclaws: Padma Patil, Morag MacDougal, Mandy Brocklehurst, Su Li, Michael Corner, Sarah Fawcett, Steven Capper, Belinda Dunstan, and Linus Moon. Missing: Terry Boot, Anthony Goldstein, Lisa Turpin, Stephen Cornfoot.
Slytherins: Millicent Bulstrode, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Daphne Greengrass, Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott, Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini, Sally-Anne Perks, and of course Harry Marvolo.
Missing: Tracey Davis.
Am I missing anything?Where do you think the new names come from? Where do you think the missing characters are right now?
Edit: Turns out that there are no new students in Harry's year. All the ones that I hadn't found previously were mentioned in canon but not affiliated with a specific house, which is why I missed them the first time. (The fact that Bund vs. Bundy mattered made me go check again).
Edit 2: I'm putting known half-bloods in bold, just for the sake of keeping track and because I'm curious what the ratio of halfbloods to purebloods is in this group.

Date: 2008-11-25 08:13 pm (UTC)With Katrina Bundy, she may actually have been there and never named, because there was something about an unnamed Gryffindor girl at HP Lexicon.
With Stephen Capper, could it be Stephen Cornfoot, but maybe with a different last name? Maybe if his parents got divorced or remarried soon after he was born, they would have changed his last name. Or if he is a half-blood, maybe his name was changed to that of his wizarding parent rather than his Muggle parent.
There are two others. Assuming they weren't actually there in the books but unnamed, they could either be children who in canon were casualties of the Death Eater round-up after Voldemort's defeat (like Neville's parents were), or they could be related to some of the wizards who immigrated to England when Voldemort took power (like Pascoal (http://alt-bellatrix.livejournal.com/1566.html?thread=5662#t5662)). Or they could be homeschooled in the books by overprotective parents who didn't want them to be exposed to Dumbledore's ideas or to attending school with Muggleborns.

Date: 2008-11-26 01:50 am (UTC)Neville did mention that the Gryffindor boys are particularly close friends, and I'd bet that the smallness of their group contributes to that.
