I'm wondering if he got hit with something that induces drowsiness while he was getting out with the pin, it would explain why his comments kept cutting off alarmingly.

I'm thinking transforming back and forth to deal with the Horcrux trying to influence him. But a curse is plausible too, especially if Harry was sedated and the spell affected Ron-as-snake too.
