Madame Defarge is an extremely vengeful character in Tale of Two Cities.  Takes vengence to the generational level, wanting to kill the grandchildren of the perpetrator of a wrong against her family.

I wouldn't be surprised if the author's of these books were presented to students as wizards/witches, but I suppose that wouldn't explain the lack of magic and magical terms inside the books....unless they were altered?

Seems like a lot of trouble to go to, but I wouldn't put it past them!

I think the route they would go is that these writers were wizards who had to keep their identity secret, at least for the sake of publication. Though come to think of it, there's the problem of why they would deign to publish for Muggles at all. Hmmm.
