In reference to Carrow's most recent post
Madame Defarge is an extremely vengeful character in Tale of Two Cities. Takes vengence to the generational level, wanting to kill the grandchildren of the perpetrator of a wrong against her family.

Date: 2009-03-04 06:15 am (UTC)In a way, this could be taken as further proof of Muggle inferiority (if these writers haven't been co-opted, a la Mozart etc). The characters I can remember Carrow mentioning are Justine and now this Mme. Defarge, both obviously signs of the moral turpitude of Muggle writers.
Interesting that he's "allowed" to post about these Muggle authors in his journal, though I can't imagine anyone but Voldie daring to object. I'm wondering if these writers were co-opted after all. Man, how do you contradict something like that?

Date: 2009-03-04 12:44 pm (UTC)We've had one other character mention Dickens: Neville. His gran was reading A Christmas Carol, right? I wonder if Dickens is just such a famous English writer that wizards have to co-opt him or they read him anyway. He's too influential and famous--and too much a part of British culture--to be simply ignored.

Date: 2009-03-04 03:03 pm (UTC)I do remember that bit about A Christmas Carol, now that you mention it. And I wondered the same thing then, about how smart it was for Neville to be mentioning this great Muggle writer (especially considering the undertones of what he was saying).
