Yes, all the things he could never do before. First name, capital letters, using the word "I", showing his face, saying that he is a wizard.
I wonder how he was able to get sorted by the Sorting Hat? It's in Dumbledore's office in the books, right? But I can't quite imagine McG letting him use it, because he doesn't know she's in the Order, so she'd have to maintain appearances for him. I wonder if the scene where he used the Sorting Hat was hinted at when it happened and nobody caught it.
That was my next question once the GLEE subsided: When did he get sorted? Was it a secret Twins thing, in which case Hermione probably wasn't involved, or did McGonagall let them do it? I don't think it'll be long before Terry brings Hermione into the "I solemnly swear" loop.
I know you can read this for yourself so there's no good reason for me to link it to you, but I love the explanation of how he got sorted, so I am linking it anyway (http://alt-terry.livejournal.com/14235.html?thread=83099#t83099).
Geez! Thank goodness it went to Terry, who knows everything about discretion and necessary secrecy. I wonder if he might tell Hermione, though, who then might report it to the Order?
The Sorting Hat is a pretty good judge of character, since that's what it was created for. I'm guessing it wouldn't have told him if it didn't know he could be trusted with the information.
I like the thought of Terry finding out about the Order and their secrets, though. Since Hermione will be in the position to read both journal locks, I wonder if she will tell either secret group about the existence of the other.
I was thinking about this some more (okay, and I read the threat YET AGAIN). Not only does this imply that the Hat knows Order secrets, which I suppose makes sense if it lives in McGonagall's office, but I wonder if the Hat could actually be considered a member of the Order. It sounds a little silly, but then, it apologized for the fact that Terry's name could not have been left out of the false book.
In the books, the Hat warns the students of incoming strife and discord. Is is actually collaborating, not just sympathizing, with the Order? That is, does it play some active role in this false book business? Because wow. That is some Hat.
Compare this (http://alt-terry.livejournal.com/13981.html) to the first post he ever made (http://alt-terry.livejournal.com/556.html), too . . . *sniff*
Seeing the differences between how he talks in public and behind the lock just shows how clever he's been all along, doesn't it? I mean, I always hoped that all that third-person house-elfish affectation was fake, but I also worried that he might just be broken enough to really talk like that. I'm so glad to see he's not.
This version of the twins is definitely the most positive interpretation of them I've seen!
I've been reading some fanfic lately by someone who doesn't like them from canon and thinks of them as pretty mean and callous, especially in the way they treated the Slytherins. It's a big contrast with this version. I think both ways of seeing them have solid roots in canon. But these twins are very fun to read about, and I am so proud of them for creating this journal lock, and for caring about people more than pranks!
I felt SO stunned and elated for him when I saw this that the first thing I wanted was for Poppy to see it. Once she figured out that he's not going to get in trouble for posting that, I bet she'd just take a minute in her infirmary to sit and cry. I almost did.
I'm obviously betting she'll have access!
It always strikes me (in the books, too) that Molly and Arthur ought to be so darn proud of raising two moral, kind, thoughtful, clever, brave boys willing to fight the system when it's wrong. They're all kinds of awesome.
I don't know whether I want Poppy to be able to read it or not. On one hand, I like the idea of seeing Terry freely interacting with others as much as possible. On the other hand, I wonder if her presence would intimidate him a little and make him feel less free than he does with just the twins. Maybe she'll be able to read it, but choose not to let on that she can, at least for now.
I think the Weasleys should be proud of Percy as well. I think his heart is in the right place, or at least is headed in the right direction, and he's the only one of the school-aged Weasleys who is cautious and controlled enough that he could join the Order. And while the other young Weasleys have strong emotional reactions against the injustices they see around them, I think Percy's actually thinking all the moral issues of this society through from multiple perspectives and coming slowly to his own conclusions. Like with whether the Head Boy and Girl should be able to use Crucio. He didn't think they should, but he engaged in a reasoned debate with the other side to defend his point, rather than just flying off the handle and yelling insults at anyone who disagreed with him. And there's something I really admire about that.
On the subject of the Order and the twins I'm conflicted. They take terrible risks, but at the same time they have hidden a massively complex magical working from the whole school by a closely crafted series of misdirections and stunts. They've been caught once and that was a 'side' project (getting into Carrow's residence) and were sloppy in one other respect (I'm assuming they are the ones pilfering from the infirmary's stockpile. They may be too noticeable for the Order but I could see them being used by the order even if not fully brought in.
That's true about the twins. They actually were super-careful about how they tested their journal lock, starting with something that wouldn't get them in huge trouble (insulting Percy) and then slowly stepping it up until they gave the strongest test of insulting the LP (but on April 1st, so that if they had been noticed they might be treated slightly more leniently). And now that we've found out today that they have three locks on the journal, and that they've tested it on several trusted adults to make sure it couldn't be cracked even by someone who had the password...
I should probably give them a little more stealth credit.
I don't think they're the ones stealing from the infirmary. Poppy gave some sort of reason not to suspect them a while ago. Which doesn't 100% mean it's not them, but messing with medicines seems to not fit with the morality they have in the game.
Have we heard what is being stolen from the Infirmary? If it's supplies I still think it's likely to be them, we have no one else with castle access that we have any indication is up to something magically illicit. If it's actual medicines I'm more inclined to believe you.
The one that I remember was that someone had taken *some* amount of medicine from one of the bottles and then had diluted it with something else to make it still seem full. And the result was that the medicine didn't work the way it was supposed to and a student got a bit sicker, I think.
Since I just found it, I'll link it anyway. Here (http://alt-poppy.livejournal.com/3859.html?thread=29459#t29459) is the bit about the Pepper-Up being diluted and making a patient sick.
OMG when I saw his post with that many comments, I was so scared that the lock had failed or something. My chest actually tightened a bit! And now I'm so heart-warmed that I'm about to go read that thread again.
My heart feels quite warm as well. I think one of the great qualities of an RPG-format story is that payoff like this can feel so amazing, because there have been months and months of emotional build-up, and then the feeling of finally having a place for Terry to talk freely and show his face and be welcomed...
I saw that this morning, thank you! Toward the end he's slipping a bit into his habitual mode of speaking, but he's right that he doesn't ever want to slip in front of anybody dangerous. Just wow, a dozen more wow's.
Lately I've been reading some fanfic with Terry Boot in it, and I almost laugh at how differently he's portrayed outside this RP.
So . . . were all the smirks worth it? You can finally see how long we've been working on this plot and how many breadcrumbs there really were, and boy, we've sure been looking forward to April 1 and the aftermath!
Yes, very well played. Lots of clues, but not enough to telegraph everything before the end, even to people who were looking closely. And truly excellent payoff, which I hope we'll get to enjoy for a long time to come.
Careful about all that smirking, though; you don't want to develop wrinkles!
Well, there -were- quite a few players from TIN in the game when we started, but things have shifted around quite a bit since and now there's only two left, alas (two players who were in TIN, that is - we have more than two players total, obvs!).
This is the first time I've read anything like this - a friend on my LJ flist linked to it when it was first starting up, and I've been hooked since. I'm amazed at the patience it must take to run this game and especially to set up plot twists like this.
Like brimtoast was saying, it's literally months of build-up, for both the players and the readers. And what a payoff!!
